this housing and commercial complex was designed for downtown dallas, texas and aims to replicate thenatural cycles of a hillside environment. the project is a collaboration between two portuguese-based
architectural firms atelier DATA and MOOV, and will run ‘off the grid’, acting as a working model of
sustainability for cities around the globe. the design is focused on preserving nature and also uses it as
a model for organizing space. the structure is made of a series of valleys and hilltops. in the valleys, trees
and luxurious local plantings make up the base, while more resilient plant are placed as the altitude
increases. atop the hills (building volumes) solar thermal, photovoltaic and wind energy is harvested.
the interior of the complex has a wide mix of units from studio apartments to 3 bedrooms as well as
commercial properties. other green measures in the building include a water recycling system on the
rooftops which stores rainwater underground for use later. in spite of the unusual form of the structure
the entire complex is designed to be built using 100% prefabricated construction. ground breaking is
scheduled for early 2011.http://www.atelierdata.com
