Located in the city center of NhaTrang, LAM Café is the place where the local people and the tourists from every where can come to enjoy not only coffee but also the architectural space. The name of LAM, which means ‘louvers’ in English, expresses the structure and the architectural concept by itself.

The roof that has the shape of coconut leaves covers 350m2 of the 800m2 total area. The concept comes from the image of coconut trees, which is common in this coastal city. Wooden louveris considered as a main design language because the land wasrent in limited time so that the construction should be the fastest, cheapest and easy to remove.

The building is located in there sidential area that isnot stylish and tidy so that the roof is designed carefully to control and support the nice view. The roof contains three layers: coconut leaves – the lowest layer, tiling layer – the middle one and the last layer of fishing nets. In the future, this roof will be covered by plant to become a green roof.

Wooden louver system isnot only the aestheti celement butal so the solution for construction. Louvers are considered as a partition and a load-bearing component as well. The space created by louvers isnot too close as ‘box café’ or too open as ‘country side cafe’. The natural lighting and ventilation come through the system of wooden louvers bring the interesting feeling to each seat.

Landgoed de Groene Kamer

Landgoed De Groene Kamer seeks to develop a new type of country estate in the southwest of the city of Tilburg where eco-retail, nature and recreation are brought together. A place where city and countryside meet, both physically and programmatically.

Shift’s proposal, Topos, focuses a radical integration of architecture and landscape.

Green boulevard

Topos transforms the flat body of earth in the existing master plan of .Fabric and LOLA into a differentiated earthwork. The boulevard, the squares and the buildings are placed in and on this earthwork. The body of earth is used as an instrument for place making and therefore becomes topographic. Each retail cluster is embedded in a specific three dimensional earth shape to create a sequence of differentiated places (topos). Shopping on the green boulevard becomes a natural experience in which the division between city and countryside, between architecture and landscape, is dissolved.

Square

The entrance square is formed by a bowl-shaped earthwork which opens towards the parking arboretum. The circular shape embraces the visitors and welcomes them into a different world that invites for exploration. The various buildings situated in, on or under the earthwork bowl can be accessed from the square. Each building typology has its own specific connection with the earthwork and the surrounding landscape.

Block

The block houses a so-called landwinkel, a large shop where local food products are being sold. It functions as one of the anchor programs of the whole Groene Kamer development and is therefore prominently placed on top of the earthwork. The omnidirectional block manifests itself as a transparent greenhouse with a “wooden sculpture” inside.

This sculpture is designed as a cross shaped volume which allows for open corners in the building. The corners function as indoor gardens that literally bring the outside inside and vice versa. The cross volume is carved open on the ground floor, introducing a continuous and flexible floor plan that connects the corner gardens.

Campus

The campus is designed as a distinct and recognizable cluster of three retail buildings, literally embedded in the landscape. The entrances of the buildings are oriented towards the inside of the campus, to create a shared court that seduces the visitors inside. All buildings have a maximum transparency towards the shared interior. The other, more closed, facades are provided with a continuous horizontal strip window that follows the topography of the earthwork. This strip window introduces a new “constructed” horizon which dramatizes the three dimensional character of the earthworks both from the inside and from the outside.

Restaurant

The restaurant manifests itself as a triangular carve through the body of earth. The carve accommodates an open entrance towards the square, a covered middle part with the seating area and a large terrace towards the south. The other functions of the restaurant are situated in the body of earth adjacent to the carve. Foldable window panels allow the complete south façade to open up, erasing the border between inside and outside.

Kristin Jarmund Architects in collaboration with C. F. Møller Architects, has recently won a major competition to design a spectacular new landmark project in the city of Oslo, for the client KLP Eiendom AS, one of Norway’s largest property investors. The project, which has been dubbed “Crystal Clear”, consists of three towers, which grow organically from the ground to form a sculptural cluster, and are composed of stacked, prismatic volumes.

The development totals approx. 90,000 m² of offices, commercial space and possibly housing, located at one of Oslo’s most valuable sites, the former postal sorting office adjacent to the central station. ‘Crystal Clear’ ties in with the city’s skyline, and the string of developing landmark projects that will help turn Oslo into one of Europe’s most modern capitals.

Here’s some more info from the architects:

A high-rise development, located at Norway’s most important traffic hub in central Oslo, and with fantastic views of the waterfront and fjord-landscape beyond. The idea is to create a landmark sculptural ensemble of towers, yet observe the harmony with the surrounding, low-rise urban fabric of the capital. The three towers of approx. 110, 65 and 55 m height, are arranged along the edges of the site, and the tallest tower is aligned with the existing nearby Oslo Plaza and Postgirobygget towers, while the lower buildings form the link to the city.

The three towers have clear-cut and vertical elevations to the exterior of the site, with large openings and setbacks forming windows to selected viewpoints. In contrast, the elevations towards the interior of the site are composed of stacked, glazed volumes, freely arranged to form a prismatic and crystalline appearance. The layout secures the views over the water, not only for the three new buildings but also the city beyond.

In between the towers, a two-story base containing shops and restaurants forms an undulating landscape that connects to street level via ramps, plateaus and stairs. This base creates a calm urban garden, framed by the tall buildings, with recreational space and cafes for the city and the buildings occupants. The towers are designed with a high degree of flexibility to house offices, hotels and possibly housing.

Location: District, Seoul

Yongsan Dream Hub corporation presented today the MVRDV designed residential development of the Yongsan Business district: two connected luxury residential high-rises. A 260 meter tall tower and a 300 meter tall tower are connected in the centre by a pixelated cloud of additional program offering amenities and outside spaces with wide views. The towers with a total surface of 128,000m2 are expected to be completed in 2015.

The two towers are positioned at the entrance of the Yongsan Dreamhub project, a master plan designed by Studio Libeskind, extending the business district of the South Korean capital Seoul. The southern tower reaches a height of 260 meters with 54 floors, the northern tower 300 meters with 60 floors. Halfway, at the level of the 27th floor the cloud is positioned, a 10 floor tall pixelated volume, connecting the two towers. The cloud differentiates the project from other luxury developments, it moves the plinth upwards and makes space on ground floor level for public gardens, designed by Martha Schwartz.

Usually a high-rise adds little to the immediate surrounding city life, by integrating public program to the cloud the typology adds in a more social way to the city. Inside the cloud, besides the residential function, 14,357m2 of amenities are located: the sky lounge – a large connecting atrium, a wellness centre, conference centre, fitness studio, various pools, restaurants and cafes. On top of the cloud are a series of public and private outside spaces, patios, decks, gardens and pools. To allow fast access the cloud is accessible by special express elevators.

The luxurious apartments range from 80m2 to 260m2 of which some offer double height ceilings , patios or gardens. The towers with a perfect square floor plan contain four corner apartments per floor offering each fine daylight conditions and cross ventilation. Each tower is accessed via a grand lobby at ground level; the rest of the ground floor is divided into town houses. In addition to the amenities the Cloud furthermore contains 9,000m2 of Officetel (Office-Hotel) a typical Korean typology and 25,000m2 panoramic apartments with specific lay-outs. The top floors of both towers are reserved for penthouse apartments of 1200m2 with private roof gardens.

Jaeger and Partner design for the Shenzhen Archive Towers recently received a Design Excellence Award in the AIA Chicago 2011 Design Awards programme. This competition scheme was acknowledged in the Unbuilt Design Award category in a contest run by Shenzhen Archives Bureau.

Shenzhen’s Meiling District resides between the City Center and new north railway station, forming an urban centre with the Archive site at its heart. Creating an authentic urban space, the design unifies four parcels (city blocks) by removing dividing streets. Circulation is reorganised, thereby harnessed, by introducing a perimeter one-way street system. The enlarged spatial boundary establishes an appropriate scale and symbolic relationship with the City Plaza.

Defining the Archive precinct, a continuous floating perimetre block embraces four discrete volumes: three towers and a cube. This framework defines an internal landscape – an escape from city into garden. Circular green zones denote building entries inviting traversing pedestrians. Public functions, exhibition spaces and select retail reside under the permeable perimeter, encouraging through circulation and urban interface. Discrete functional elements establish a new internal urban realm within the frame.

A carefully positioned cube contains public functions, exhibition hall, conferencing and archival information centre. Inspired by traditional forms, three shimmering archival towers embody abstracted pagoda characteristics, symbolically protecting archive documents within.

The ‘pagoda’ towers vary in height and façade treatment creating individual identity expressing that different archives are internally stored. Shaped apertures strategically populate the double façade, protecting valuable contents, while creating an energy efficient envelope. The 91,930 sq m project engenders a communicative quality, setting the Archive in dialogue with the surroundings. “static.worldarchitecturenews.com“

Considered one of the best Japanese restaurants in Mexico City and due to its remarkable success, Tori-Tori is now moving to a bigger location in the same area of Polanco, Mexico City, where Architect Michel Rojkind and Industrial Designer Hector Esrawe teamed up to make it happen.

At the residential area in Polanco that has seen changes in its zoning, houses have been transformed to office spaces or restaurants.

Sometimes things happen so unnoticeably, that just a small sign appears where a new space has been developed with a completely different program inside, while preserving its exterior. Aware of this, Rojkind and Esrawe wanted to give enough strength to the new program that they proposed to transform the space inside out.

Taking advantage of the plot’s conditions, the parking space will be left where it is, to use the budget mainly for restructuring and renovating the house, stripping the residential interior and removing all familiar features to produce an entirely different environment.

‘We are being coherent with its culinary know-how and creating the accurate environment and situations for a gastronomical experience. The final result is achieved not only by working with the client but with his complete staff as well.’

Although the client’s requirements were oriented towards a Japanese interpretation, it was not literal, he wanted the place to have its own personal expression, contemporary and cosmopolitan, by enhancing its spatial existing conditions through different experiences, the new range of open spaces, its terraces, its sake bar and its own exclusive temple oriented to the highly demanding sushi lovers.

Maintaining a very intimate and subtle feel towards the first encounter with the exterior, once you enter you’ll find yourself in a terrace, where eating and drinking are embraced by natural vegetation.

The building’s organic façade and landscape were carefully designed to become an extension of the restaurant creating a strong relationship between the inside and the outside.

The interior receives and follows the exterior with subtle contrasts. Each room has its own nature and shows a clear relationship with its function. The furniture was inspired and made for Tori Tori and developed with a direct orientation through each space. During more than eight months a complete collection of chairs and tables where created, for both exterior and interior use.

‘We seek in the project a chance for the users to link with the different ambiances and choose their favorites. Each space’s materials, setup and characteristics towards the furniture generate a wide spectrum of options and sensations for its assiduous clients.’ I.D. Héctor Esrawe, ESRAWE studio

The Façade, which seems to emerge from the ground climbing up through the building, as if mimicking the natural ivy surrounding the retaining walls, is made up of two self-supporting layers of steel plates cut with a CNC machine and handcrafted to exact specifications. The facade’s pattern responds to the inside openings, filtering light, shadows, and views that will constantly invade the interior spaces. An atmosphere enriched by the spectrum of subtle changes.

Consultants: MKA, Transsolar
Client: CBD Leasing Company (CLC) and Minsheng Financial Leasing Company (MSFL)
Program: Headquarters buildings for two of China’s largest growing financial institutions, including owned and leased office space, operations halls, multi-purpose rooms, boutique and “big box” retail, high end dining, cafeterias, gyms, gallery, executive club, shared lobby, and parking
Area: 131,600 m² (1,416,000 sf)
Core & Shell Construction Cost: RMB 1.024 billion ($160.3 million)
Status: Limited competition, submitted 2011

REX shared with us their proposal for two of China’s major financial institutions, CLC and MSFL, which chose to consolidate their new headquarters on a single site within Shenzhen’s CDB. Although the planning regulations permit tall buildings on the site, the maximum allowable building area and the proposed combination of offices and retail seemingly dictate a perfunctory tower-and-plinth scheme. Instead, CLC’s and MSFL’s offices are organized into two highly efficient blocks with: an ideal 9 meter distance between core and façade; an entirely flexible, column-free plan; the largest floor area allowed by code and urban design requirements; and an efficiency ratio of 80%. More images and architects’ description after the break.

The ideal office blocks are raised to the planning regulation’s height limit to maximize their property value, views, daylight, and iconographic potential.

On the given site, a typical podium would compress retail and collective programs into an undifferentiated mass that would reduce property value, limit daylight, and eliminate most public space. To avoid this condition, the retail and collective programs are amassed into two billboards of attractors, providing each program a unique identity and amplified visibility. Further, maximum pedestrian space is reclaimed and a new, dynamic urban room is created to boost the vitality of Shenzhen’s CBD.

The two towers are shifted to make the best possible day-lighting relationships between them and their neighbors, and are sheathed in vertical fins of aluminum (CLC) and stone (MSFL) for self-shading and glare control. The resulting towers combine the clients’ desire to project the image of elegance, responsibility, and stability with their wish to stimulate innovation, creativity, and public engagement.

To create the desired typological duality in each building, each structure’s pair of concrete cores holds aloft a “launch pad” truss that supports a conventional high-rise gravity framing system and conventional office plans.

The launch pad trusses free the lower levels from normative structural constraints associated with high-rise construction. Hence, retail and collective functions can become an “ant farm” of highly individuated attractors.

Navigating Shenzhen’s complex urban design requirements, the lobbies and landscape wrest rare public space from an otherwise deplete CDB. The CLC & MSFL Towers playfully impregnate the elegance of Mies van der Rohe with the provocation of Archigram. “ www.archdaily.com“

Giacomuzzi Ltd. in Kaltern is a modern plumbing firm specialized in sustainable and ecologic technologies. The new headquarters building reflects the future-oriented core-business through the architectural appearance and sustainability. The building grows up from street level to second floor like a bent ribbon. In between it shelters three storeys very open to the surroundings due to its ample insulated glass façades. The technical solutions such as photovoltaics and solar panels are integrated seamlessly into the ribbon. The installations aren’t hidden but proudly exhibited. The company housing in the uppermost floor is extremely extraverted and represents a model of modern and ecological life, and the ground floor harbours the open space offices, protected from direct insolation by the elegantly protruding ribbon. In between there is a whole floor dedicated to exposition and show room. The concrete masses are used to regulate the building’s microclimate.

Location: Kuala Lumpur,

Ole Scheeren to build landmark tower in Kuala Lumpur

Ole Scheeren, the architect behind one of the most iconic buildings of the 21st century, the CCTV headquarters in Beijing, today revealed his design for a new landmark tower in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The 268 meter tall tower, Angkasa Raya, was unveiled today at an official ceremony in the capital, and will stand as a symbol of Malaysia’s diverse and multi-cultural society.

In 1998, Kuala Lumpur made world news for constructing the tallest skyscrapers in the world – the Petronas Twin Towers. Today, Malaysia will once again appear on the world stage with a stunning new piece of architecture that alters the perception of what a skyscraper can be and how it connects to the city by inviting life into its balancing heights and visually projecting it back into the urban landscape.

Commissioned by leading Malaysian property developer Sunrise Berhad (a member of UEM Land Holdings Berhad), the new tower will stand directly across the Petronas, offering new architectural qualities to the vibrancy of the city’s inner core. Rather than a single mass, Angkasa Raya is made up of three cubic volumes which appear to float above open, horizontal layers. The “ground levels” form an interconnected spiral of both pedestrian and vehicular circulation and draw the diversity of the streetscape into the building. A multitude of public spaces and activities including shops, a food court, car parks, terraces and prayer rooms bring urban life into the transparent stacks, while tropical nature invades and enlivens its multiple levels.

A second stack of horizontal slabs is lifted up in the air and hovers above the city. These “sky levels” contain a restaurant, bar, and multi-function spaces amid lush vegetation, giving the public access to one of the city’s most breathtaking views across its skyline and the neighboring Twin Towers. The three floating blocks accommodate the high-end Service Residences, a Luxury Hotel and Premium Offices.

Angkasa Raya demonstrates possibilities for the amplification of life and activities within the heart of one of Asia’s great capitals. Lush green gardens and terraces offer intimacies within the extreme urban density of the surrounding metropolis, while carefully shaded facades and a naturally ventilated atrium underline the environmental responsibility of the design.

With demolition of the existing building on the site completed in August 2011, construction is set to begin in the first quarter of 2012.

Angkasa Raya Project Description

Angkasa Raya, situated in Malaysia’s capital at the intersection of Jalan Ampang and Jalan P. Ramlee, directly across the well-known Petronas Twin Towers in the heart of Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), presents a new typology in high-rise skyscraper design that overtly expresses the inhabitation of diverse urban activities in a tropical environment and captures the vibrancy of the city’s multifaceted culture.

Angkasa Raya is comprised of five distinct elements – three floating elevated tower blocks and two multi-level zones of open horizontal slabs – that are autonomous yet connected to one another in a uniquely stacked and shifting configuration of varied functional and urban typologies. Rather than competing with the Twin Towers in the form of another “twin” or blending into the surrounding context of singular towers on a podium, Angkasa Raya offers a new contemporary reading of the capital city and stands as an icon of the harmonious and dynamic balance of Malaysia’s cultural multiplicity and diversity.

At a height of 268 meters over 65 floors, and 165,000 square meters of construction area, Angkasa Raya accommodates Premium Offices, a Luxury Hotel and Service Residences. Each function occupies one of the three rectangular volumes which, through their mutual support and delicate balance, generate a unity that is both multiple and symbiotic.

The “Ground Levels”, a series of open horizontal slabs, bring urban life into the building and unfold two interconnected spirals of vehicular and pedestrian circulation, mixing signature retail, restaurants/cafes, a food court, and prayer rooms with abundant outdoor greenery and urban streetscape. The plural trajectories weave through the open levels and offer multiple street-like experiences of interconnected activities. A grand staircase welcomes the public to the second floor of the Ground Levels and provides an amphitheatre-like seating area with views towards the Petronas Twin Towers and Suria KLCC.

Moving beyond the typical model of inert multi-level parking podiums, the open framework of the Ground Levels introduces and extends the coexistence of urban activities and injects exciting public spaces into the heart of the building. While multi-story parking podiums are typically seen as an urban blight, this integrated model of multi-use indoor-outdoor activity fuses multicultural programs into a system of civic inclusivity and public accessibility.

At the virtual intersection between the three tower blocks, 120 meters above the city, are four levels of tropical greenery and metropolitan activity: the Sky Levels. Catapulting the public energy of the Ground Levels skywards, a signature bar and restaurant with outdoor dining terraces, an infinity edge pool, as well as a multi-function banquet hall, business lounges and meeting rooms offer premium work and leisure space in a lush environment with spectacular elevated views of the dramatic skyline.

The Service Residences, a family of high-end condominiums, are located in the upper tower block from floor 37 to 64and grouped around a naturally ventilated atrium. Over 280 units of studios, one to three bedroom apartments and duplexes, as well as penthouses benefit from the stunning views of the surrounding cityscape.

The luxury Hotel occupies the smaller tower volume facing Jalan Ampang. With more than 200 suites of varying sizes, a distinct type of short-term city dwelling complements Angkasa Raya’s offerings.

The Premium Offices in the lowest and largest tower block provide flexible floor space facing the Petronas Twin Towers at one of the city’s most prestigious addresses.

The carefully calibrated offsetting of the tower volumes with the Ground and Sky Levels creates a series of outdoor landscape and activity terraces that provide numerous moments of tropicality that punctuate Angkasa Raya in the form of lush vegetation, thereby maximizing the amount of green areas within the dense site. Hotel guests will enjoy dedicated amenities including a business center, club lounge and café, fitness center, and outdoor lap pool. The Service Residences are likewise equipped with its own set of dedicated facilities on top of the Sky Levels – lap pool, Jacuzzi, Children’s pool, gym, and an expansive landscaped garden.

The tower façades are clad with modular aluminum sun-shading, geometrically optimized and carefully oriented to reduce solar heat gain under the intense tropical sun, and contribute to substantial energy savings through passive means. Other environmental features include a naturally ventilated atrium within the Residences Tower, eliminating the need for air conditioning and recirculation. By connecting the atrium through a series of large- scale voids to the building envelope, natural daylight is provided throughout the vertical space while communal seating areas and tropical lounges are created within the atrium. Rainwater harvesting, landscape re-irrigation, insulated green roofs, and the natural shading effects of the horizontal slabs of the Ground and Sky Levels effectively reduce the energy and water consumption and optimize the carbon footprint of the building. ” http://www.buro-os.com“

It locates in the suburb of Nigata City as one of the big cities in Japan.
In the suburb of Nigata City, many suburbian architectures appear. The majority is classified in ‘the commercial establishment with strong color and fanciful form’ and ‘the monotonous offices and warehouses finished with grey or beige color’.
We intended to design a new suburbian architecture that reflects the character of the suburb but was involved in neither the fancifulness competition nor the monotonous office.

1. Low cost and box form volume
Since the construction cost was extreme low, we adopted a simple box volume as a minimum size necessary for getting the legal certification. The low cost and the box form were the important characters for the suburbian architecture.

2. Design of reverse : Continuous but independent
The keyword of design is ‘REVERSE’. It was based on the field survey and the analysis of the suburb of Nigata. By reversing some characters of the suburbian architecture, we designed an architecture that was continuous with the usual suburbian architecture and townscape but independent from those by the somewhat different atmosphere based on the reverse.

2a. Reverse of the exterior appearance
In the usual suburbian architecture, the windows reflect the state of the interior, that is, the windows open from the inside towards the outside. While, in this factory, each-side’s window reflects the different state of the each side’s exterior, that is, it opens from the outside towards the inside.
Each side façade is composed of the windows with different height, rhythm and sash type. The gap of each side encounters at the corner of the facade.

2b. Reverse of the interior color
In the usual suburbian architecture, the interior is finished in monotonous colors such as grey, white and beige. Contrastively, in this factory, the strong color of orange and light blue is introduced so that it would make reverse the preconception of usual people for the interior color of the suburbian architectrue. The color is the only finish material that the low-cost suburbian architecture can use.
The interior colors changed from orange to light blue at the glass screen in the center. When they pass the changing point, they are always conscious of the reverse.

2c. Connection of reverse
A few staffs manage the factory. So the client hoped to be able to take charge of it easily.
The walls open with radiated form from the lounge towards the outdoor wash space so that the staff could take charge from the desk in the lounge. The space between the radiated walls is a waiting space. Both side of the walls are finished in mirror that reflects the dead angle of the interior of the factory and the outdoor washing space.
By the effect of the mirror, the two colors of interior, the real exterior image and the virtual exterior image on the mirror encounter together in the waiting space. Then the waiting space becomes a pivot part of the factory.
