Bud Clark Commons sets a new standard for public services by combining supportive housing with a community resource center. Located at the gateway to downtown Portland, near historic Union Station and bordering the Pearl District, an upper income mixed-use neighborhood, Bud Clark Commons achieves a noticeable balance between the rigorous programmatic requirements of a coalition lead by the City of Portland, a progressive design approach, and sustainable building practices.

The mission of Bud Clark Commons is to provide a continuum of services such as health, housing, and learning resources, to assist homeless individuals transition from an unstable condition to a more permanent living arrangement. The architecture helps achieve this goal in both form and function. The three distinct program elements are a walk-in day center with access to services; a temporary shelter with 90 beds for homeless men; and 130 efficient, studio apartments on the five upper floors of the eight-story building. The apartments are designated for very low-income women or men seeking permanent housing.

Ground level floor-to-ceiling windows extend the length of the west façade; the abundance of glazing allows natural light to saturate the interior. The upper façade is light and dark brick punctuated by patterned window openings accented with shades of green glass. The patterning distinguishes individual units on the upper floors, but also makes a bold aesthetic statement on Broadway, a gateway to downtown Portland. The apartments are entered on the south side of the building, where access is restricted to tenants or their guests. A door located on the west side of the building provides entry to the temporary shelter, while public access to the day center is on the north side of the building, on grade at the second floor level. A landscaped courtyard with seating, tables, and a bioswale water feature provide a transitional space between the street and the safety of the day center.

The first floor common area shared by men at the transitional shelter is bound by two bunkrooms with bathrooms and showers, a kitchen, exercise and counseling rooms, and a private outdoor courtyard. Day center users enter the building through the public courtyard where there are lockers, bike racks and dog kennels. At the front desk, users are directed to a number of resources: a hygiene center with showers and laundry, counseling, a mail and computer center, library, medical center, and barbershop. The common area with ample seating and tables for dining is open, airy and receives natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows. The third floor, features an art studio, garden balcony, and a community courtroom that doubles as a classroom.

The upper floors are home to 130 tenants who must apply to receive permanent, supportive housing. The apartments are efficient, comfortable, and easy to maintain. Smart design perks include bedbug proof furniture, and a closet that doubles as a bike rack. A comfortable year-round temperature is maintained through a highly efficient sensor that shuts off the heater when the window is open. Fresh air is circulated into each apartment through a heat recovery system.

Accessibility, natural light, plentiful clean air, and durable materials were essential to the success of the building from both a sustainable and a functional perspective. A solar-powered hot water system, in addition to a high-performance exterior envelope, energy-efficient lighting, and green roofs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while saving the public in energy costs. Low-flow plumbing fixtures, bioswales, and greywater recycling reduce water use, and all materials are locally sourced, and sustainably harvested or produced. The building has a LEED Platinum certification by the United States Green Building Council, with savings from the use of energy-efficient technologies estimated at $60,000 per year.

The aim of a Maggie’s centre is to provide an environment of practical and emotional support for people with cancer, their families and friends. Since the opening of the first Maggie’s in Edinburgh in 1996, the Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres foundation has grown substantially, commissioning and developing a series of innovative buildings designed by world class architects. While contemporary architecture has a reputation, deservedly or not, for being at times cold or alienating, the goal of each Maggie’s Centre – whether in Glasgow, London, or Hong Kong – is to provide a space where people feel at home and cared for, a space that is warm, receptive, and welcoming.

Maggie’s Centres rely on the fundamental precept, often overlooked, that exceptional architecture and innovative spaces can make people feel better – thereby kindling the curiosity and imagination fundamental to feeling alive. Grand in their ambitions, but designed on a small scale, Maggie’s Centres provide a welcome respite from typical institutional hospital architecture. Their spaces are more than merely functional; they serve as a haven for those receiving treatment. In creating a place to connect and learn from others who are going through similar experiences, Maggie’s help patients to develop their sense of confidence and resourcefulness.

In 2007, Maggie’s approached OMA to design a new centre on the grounds of Gartnavel hospital in Glasgow, close to the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. OMA designed a single-level building in the form of a ring of interlocking rooms surrounding an internal landscaped courtyard. Seemingly haphazardly arranged, the building is actually a careful composition of spaces responding to the needs of a Maggie’s Centre and providing a refuge for those coping with cancer.

Instead of a series isolated rooms, the building is designed as a sequence of interconnected L-shaped figures in plan that create clearly distinguished areas – an arrangement that minimises the need for corridors and hallways and allows the rooms to flow. The plan has been organized for the spaces to feel casual, almost carefree, allowing one to feel at ease and at home, part of an empathetic community of people. At the same time the design also provides spaces for more personal moments – either in the intimate setting of the counselling rooms, or in smaller nooks and private spaces.

Located in a natural setting, like a pavilion in the woods, the building is both introverted and extroverted: each space has a relationship either to the internal courtyard or to the surrounding woodland and greenery, while certain moments provide views of Glasgow beyond. With a flat roof and floor levels that respond to the natural topography, the rooms vary in height, with the more intimate areas programmed for private uses such as counselling, and more open and spacious zones for communal use. More than any other space, the internal courtyard provides a place of sanctuary and respite.

Avanti were commissioned to design an integrated centre for hospital staff education and training, together with university research. The building was to act as the first part of a much larger redevelopment of the site and to mitigate between the suburban surroundings and the large scale hospital development to come.

The plan restores the original orthogonal order of the site reintroducing views and ‘green fingers’ and enabling natural wayfinding. The building and its neighbours are composed as a series of parallel brick planes that follow the natural terraces of the site, separated by open landscaped areas and fully glazed end facades allowing transparency through and between the buildings.

For the colour scheme Avanti worked in collaboration with lead artist Kate Blee, who says of her approach:
‘For this commission I looked at colour in relation to growth and hierarchy in nature. Earth, plant, bloom, leaf and sky. A palette inspired by nature to enliven these strong rhythmical façades. A rhythm of colour to be seen through and against the trees, by the residents living opposite the building, and to joyfully present the building across the hospital campus.’

‘I wanted the colour to be rich and saturated but not to cast distracting coloured light into the internal working environments. The colour was sprayed onto the internal face of the glazing units creating a colour light box effect rather than a stained glass effect.’

‘The commission extended into the building for the colour of the portals – visually marking the entrances into spaces along corridors and walkways. This was again about chromatic rhythms, and the colours taken from the external façade scheme were used to further connect the inside to the outside of the building and to inject placed and composed colour into the white and dark grey interior.’

Danish Henning Larsen Architects have shared with us their finalist competition entry for the new University Hospital & Faculty of Health Sciences in Odense, Denmark. As part of a team consisting of Friis & Moltke, TKT, Cowi, Rambøll Danmark, SLA Landscape and NNE Pharmaplan, Henning Larsen Architects named their proposal ‘Aurora’ – as a symbol of renewed hope and a new beginning. Aurora was one of three finalist proposals; the competing consortium Medic OUH won the competition. The first phase of the hospital is expected to be complete in 2018.

Project Description from the Architects:

The new Odense University Hospital (OUH) embodies an innovative building of high architectural quality, designed to meet the requirements and challenges of tomorrow. Like the goddess Aurora, the hospital finds renewal in the transition between old and new – and the conversion from tradition to modernity. The building honours the connection between the new OUH and the existing Faculty of Health Sciences (SUND) and emphasises a research-practice partnership, transmitting information between hospital practice and external community. The “Large House” is a continuous and compact building stock with short logistic and technical distances. The “City Quarters” consist of distinctive building units and intimate outdoor spaces. Diagnostic and treatment functions are located in the lower, continuous floors constituting the Large House, while wards and outpatient clinics are located in the upper, detached building volumes constituting the City Quarters.

The individual is the priority within the circular city structure, reflected in its intimate architecture, personalized routines, state-of-the-art treatment processes, innovative work procedures, and progressive research environments. The ground plan of Aurora meets the requirements for a highly efficient and flexible hospital facility while simultaneously providing all employees, patients, and visitors with high-quality care. Aurora offers an organic, accessible and highly legible building in integration with a cost-effective solution to contemporary healthcare.

The competition was launched internationally in December 2009, and five consortiums were selected to participate in May 2010. The project proposals were submitted in late October, and, on April 12, the winner was announced. The architecture companies of the other four consortiums included schmidt hammer lassen architects, Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, C.F. Møller and Dissing+Weitling.

Project Description from the Architects:

Architecture

The 52,000 m2 extension of Herlev Hospital will comprise a new emergency department and maternity services centre, including a pediatrics unit and maternity ward, among others.

The winning project consists of three circular buildings placed on rectangular bases – which are displaced from each other creating a number of inviting outdoor spaces. The new extension thus constitutes a down-scaled and compressed contrast to the 120 metre high rectangular geometry of the existing hospital.

The building complex as a whole will go from being a very ”large house” situated on a plot without outdoor spaces to becoming a ”built-up area” offering a variety of distinctive elements and eventful outdoor spaces. A hospital structure constitutes an organisation of a large number of small spaces which – in this project – are spatially contrasted by the near outdoor environment, inner gardens and courtyards.

A number of separate building volumes with contrasting geometries form an inspiring contrast to the existing structuralist building and contribute to considerately adapting the area as a whole to the scale of the surroundings.

Landscape

The recreational and healing effect of nature is well-documented. At Herlev Hospital, this knowledge is taken seriously – thus, luxuriant courtyards, green roof gardens and a large, central green heart provide the new hospital with an altogether vibrant and life-affirming atmosphere.

The outdoor spaces of the hospital are designed and interact in a way that makes them appeal to all senses. Water is an important element and has been incorporated in the form of water particles, water surfaces or simple pools of water. As many of the hospital users have a view of the outside environment through the windows of the building, the landscape is designed as a number of “pictures” varying with the rhythm of the hospital and changing seasons.

”We know that nature has a healing and calming effect on humans. At a hospital, this is of significant importance. In our proposal, the landscape thus plays a very central role – not only around but also in the middle of the buildings. Herlev Hospital will be a luxuriant, vibrant and green hospital, where patients will not only feel better than they normally do at a hospital – they will also recover in a shorter time”, says Stig L. Andersson, Creative Director in SLA, the landscape architects behind the winning proposal.

Extract from the citation

”Based on a comprehensive analysis of developments in the healthcare sector and a strong focus on creating a welcoming, clear, worthy and sensuous setting for patients, relatives and staff, the vision of the competition team has been to create a symbiosis between the hospital and its surroundings. A symbiosis where the individual elements form part of a natural cycle and create a “sensory hospital” that will position Herlev Hospital as an exemplary and innovative spearhead in healthcare.”

”The project powerfully unites building design and landscape into an architectural whole providing patients, relatives and staff with the experience that “focus is on the individual”. The project must be emphasised for its high and well-argued ambition level for healing architecture.

The healing potential of architecture is consistently translated into sensuous spaces – in an approach characterised by great variation and commitment at many different levels.”

Herlev Hospital

The existing Herlev Hospital was constructed by the Copenhagen County from 1966 to 1976 following an architectural competition won by architects Gehrdt Bornebusch, Max Brüel and Jørgen Selchau. The original hospital consists of a 26-storey building connected to an auditorium building designed as an elegant, fan-shaped concrete structure as well as to a four-storey building comprising examination and treatment wards.

Artist Paul Gernes is behind all interior walls coloured in light pastel shades as well as the geometric decoration of the entrance hall, which has provided this room with a unique, distinctive character.

With its 4,500 employees and 22 medical wards, Herlev Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Denmark. The Hospital is one of the four local hospitals of the Capital Region of Denmark offering acute treatment and an emergency department open around the clock. It services 425,000 citizens from the municipalities of Ballerup, Gladsaxe, Herlev, Egedal, Rødovre, Furesø, Gentofte, Lyngby-Taarbæk and Rudersdal. In addition, the hospital services 700,000 citizens from the entire Capital Region in certain specialist fields as well as citizens from outside the region in the area of cancer treatment.

The future Herlev Hospital will provide the basis for consistent patient care. The first phase of the extension offers a new emergency department and maternity services centre, among others. These buildings are expected to be completed in 2017.

The hospital of the future

Henning Larsen Architects has worked extensively on the development of hospital buildings for a number of years. Inspiring and well-defined spaces, ample daylight and a clear, well-arranged layout are of significant importance for patients’ well-being and are essential factors in the treatment process.

The architectural and spatial qualities should be combined with optimal logistics and technical structures. In consistently prepared hospital designs, focus is on providing an architectural framework for efficient and rational working procedures and a safe treatment environment.

A hospital in the 21st century should be organised with a focus on the individual – the whole, holistic individual. Whether an out-patient only at the hospital for a short period of time or whether seriously, perhaps critically ill and hospitalised for a long period, patients sense spaces, light, materiality and colour more deeply and profoundly than people in good health. This is an essential factor to keep in mind when designing a new hospital.

Henning Larsen Architects attaches great importance to designing worthy and inspiring hospitals that have a positive effect on any recovery process. Worthiness is a central theme in ensuring that patients experience the hospital as a welcoming and safe place to stay and as a place designed to meet the users’ needs, regardless of whether they are patients, relatives, visitors or staff.

Architect Peter Stasek has designed Dental INN, a dental facility in Viernheim, Germany, based on a new concept of interior design for dental practices themed ‘healing effects of organic shapes and natural structures’.

Peter Stasek has designed the ‘Dental INN’ as a therapy-lounge for dental beauty, specifically for Dr. Bergmann, an internationally recognized Implatologen. The project represents a new concept of interior design for dental practices themed ‘healing effects of organic shapes and natural structures’.

Dental INN has been selected by Molto Luce in Austria as European-Project of the year 2010 and will be presented amongst others in on-light internet platform starting in January 2011.

The project spanning 300 square meters contains six treatment rooms, a sterilisation room, a conference room, a patient lounge and a multi-functional divided island in the middle of practice. This organically-shaped island has been designed in such a way as to contain multi-functional spaces such as reception counter with additional visitor-bar counter, X-ray room, back office and kitchenette.

The island is surrounded by transparent glass walls bringing the central main catcher of the interior. A monochrome print of Viernheimer forest is featured on the glass walls. This sweeping natural tree structure has been designed as the core interior design element to provide a positive influence on the mind of the patient.

The unique fusion of colour and lighting concept forms another prime characteristic feature of the interior design of Dental INN. The entire colour palette of the walls, floor and ceiling is dominated by white, charcoal and gray shades. The lighting design includes LED illumination of the white island with programmable colour scenarios.

The architect has also proposed a sound concept for all treatment rooms, conference room and the lounge by creating a music and video surrounding background.

In addition to dental treatments such as veneers and bleaching, Dr Bergmann and his team provide, amongst other things, symposia on implantology for numerous young dental surgeons from Europe, Asia and Africa.

Danish practice schmidt hammer lassen architects has won the competition to design the new master plan and extension of Kolding Hospital in Denmark. The 32,000 m2 extension with a bed ward, an emergency ward and a new main entrance has been designed together with NIRAS, CREO, Balslev and GBL.

“Our architectural practice is new to the hospital sector, which may prove to be an advantage”, said Partner Kim Holst Jensen. He continues: “We have entered this new field of practice with a great deal of respect and curiosity. In a winning collaboration with the rest of the team, this proposal shows that our architectural ambitions and our holistic approach also have an eligibility in relation to hospitals.”

“The master plan emphasises the potential of the landscape of Kolding River Valley by continuing the orthogonal building structure while allowing the nature and greenery to penetrate the buildings,” explained Kasper Frandsen, Associate Partner at schmidt hammer lassen architects. “By situating the new bed ward on top of the existing building, we take full advantage of the beautiful view of the surrounding forest, and we outline the future developments of the hospital.”

At schmidt hammer lassen architects architecture is first and foremost designed for humans. By focusing on sensuality and presence, and with respect for the systems and the structures every hospital consists of, the ambition is to create architectural solutions that meet the needs of patients, relatives and staff while maintaining focus on human beings.

Though Kolding Hospital is the first hospital project for schmidt hammer lassen architects, the practice is pursuing other possibilities in the field. Currently, the practice is finishing another hospital competition with a proposal for the new Herlev Hospital.

The extension of Kolding Hospital has a construction sum of approx € 77 million and is expected to be completed in 2014.

the building is designed with the public facilities in the basement, ground and first floor and a patient
