The “Red Stadium” in Alkseëvsky Park in Kiev was opened on 12 August 1923 to host the 2nd All-Ukrainian Olympic Games. It was built under the direction of civil engineer L. I. Pilvinsky on the site of the All-Russia Exhibition of 1913, destroyed during the Russian Revolution. The name of the stadium was changed repeatedly in the following decades.

During the reconstruction of the Ukrainian capital Kiev in 1936, architect M. I. Grychna began work planning a new stadium with a crowd capacity of 50,000, after the original east-west orientation of the stadium was deemed unsuitable. The opening ceremony was planned for 22 June 1941, but in the event that was the day Nazi troops invaded the Soviet Union. Entry tickets for the opening ceremony, which had to be put off because of German air raids, remained valid, and allowed entry to the opening ceremony in 1948, in what was now the “Stalin Republikanskiy Stadium”.

The great opening event of the Olympic Games in 1980 took place in the now renamed “Republik-Stadion”, capacity having been extended to 100,000 in 1968. The present name of the stadium, “Olympiysky National Sports Complex” alludes to that event and the nation status

Ukraine gained on independence in 1991.

The rebuilding of the Olympiysky Stadium for the final of the European Football Championships in 2012, which Ukraine is staging jointly with Poland, is likewise being followed with great interest by the public.

The new design for the reconstruction of the stadium respects the historic fabric with its important filigree prestressed concrete upper tier built in 1968, the frame of the new roof structure being detached and placed clear of the existing bowl. This most distinctive feature of the “Kiev Central Stadium” is therefore being encased in a new filigree glass façade, which acts almost as a kind of showcase, and will be duly illuminated with appropriate lighting.

The plinth structure of the 1948 “Stalin Republikanskiy Stadium” arising from the location of the stadium on a slope at the West End will also be rebuilt in a different guise during reconstruction. The visitor terraces, accessed via broad steps, have sufficient space for restaurants and shops. These commercial areas facing Trotsky Square and the inner-city enliven the stadium area even at times when no events are on.

The geometry of the lower part of the Stand was completely redesigned and updated in accordance with safety requirements. Particularly at the west end of the stadium, beneath the main stand, extensive premises are being constructed for VIP guests, press representatives and players. After the conclusion of the European Football Championships in 2012, an athletics track will be inserted, enhancing the functionality of the stadium.

The main entrance for VIP guests is via the “Italian Court”, a reconstruction of the 1948 reception building, which will be bordered by arcades and covered by a glass roof as a vestibule for the great event, the final of the 2012 championships.

When the glazed structure of the stadium is illuminated at night, it will be an urban landmark in the cityscape of downtown Kiev. The interior of the stadium, with seats for around 68,000 people, will also gain an individual, unmistakable identity with a membrane roof structure incorporating air supports and domes of light.

With the reconstruction of the Olympiysky Stadium in Kiev for the final of the European football championships in 2012, another chapter is being written in the checkered history of the Ukrainian national stadium – this time as a visible symbol of the reincorporation of Ukraine into the European community of states after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

In 2005, the city of Shenzhen (on the mainland across the water from Hong Kong) applied to stage the 26th Summer World University Games in 2011. In terms of the number of athletes who take part, the summer World University Games is worldwide second only to the summer Olympics as a multisport occasion. The site has a great number of sporting facilities, matching the enormous growth of the city in the Pearl River delta. The overall scheme embraces the surrounding landscape to create a kind of “sports city”. Shenzhen was awarded the 2011 26th Summer World University Games in January 2007.

Planning objective
The Universiade sports center has to satisfy the functional requirements of both international sports events and the organization of other smaller and larger-scale events and concerts. The objective is to create a culturally significant, symbolic project for Shenzhen. Equal importance will be placed on the public facilities in the sports park. When no events are on, they are intended to be available to the public for leisure and recreation.

Master plan
The new city district offers various sports facilities, residential areas, and leisure and shopping facilities. Both the sports venues – the stadium, multifunctional hall and swimming hall – and the urban areas blend with the landscape at the foot of Mount Tong Gu Ling in the centre of the region. The design is inspired by the surrounding undulating landscape. This enables topographical modulation in the sports center area, with flows of people on various levels. An artificial lake connects the stadium at the foot of the mountain with the circular multifunctional hall in the north and the rectangular swimming hall west thereof. The central sports plaza is accessed via a raised promenade from the individual stadia. Two 150 m tall buildings forming the service centre round off the sports complex in the north.

Design concept
The overall complex is laid out as an extensive landscaped park with typical elements of a traditional Chinese garden. Watercourses and plants symbolize movement and development, while crystalline structures in the form of stones and rocks represent continuity and stability. The dialogue between the fluid landscape shapes and

Architect: PARK
Type: Competition entry
Location: Balling, Denmark
Year: 2011

Design strategy
The brief called for a 3.500 sqm combined community center and sports facility with emphasis on sustainability both in construction and use. But rather than applying the traditional repertoire of green technologies to the building, after initial concept design was developed, the client called for an architecture that in itself embodied the idea of the sustainable approach. A precise objective that called for bold strategy.
The building plot is surrounded by a vast green area with sports fields and recreational spaces. The obvious would be to make a flat building – a 1 level structure that sprawls into the surroundings. We chose a different approach: By stacking the functions on top one another we fulfill a number of key objectives.
First of hall the tall building stands out in the extensive agricultural landscape, and in the town of Balling, in which all buildings are one level.
Being lifted above the ’skyline’ of Balling offers spectacular views for the building’s users.
The tall building becomes a beacon visible from afar – a green landmark in a very literal sense.
The tall building is more compact than the flat one, so it has less surface area – and a smaller footprint. This leaves more space for the sports fields at ground level.
And finally the building takes its place in a genealogy of vertical beacons that has throughout history has become symbols of different eras.
Masterplan concept
The building relates to three existing functions on the site: the school, the existing sports arena and the sports fields. Our proposal for the masterplan connects these functions by means of two elements: a central plaza and a landscaped pathway.
Building envelope
The building has the shape of a cube – four stories high and 25 meters deep. The perfect cube is fitted with a parabolic roof, which gives it the characteristic profile. This ’inverted dome’ offers a number of possibilities for rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation and passive solar heating. The parabolic roof is a light wooden mansard, that sits on top the concrete structure. The idea of gravity has been a major factor in integrating the distribution of the programme with the structural design; the lighter part of the building is placed on top, while the heavier is situated in the bottom.

Once again, in 2011, one of the largest sports events in the world will be held in China. For several weeks, the summer Universiade in Shenzhen, north of Hong Kong in the Pearl River Delta on the Chinese mainland, will focus world attention on the up-and-coming city. The stadium (actually in the Bao’an district) is designed as an athletics stadium holding 40,000 spectators. However, during the 2011 Universiade, it is being used for football matches.

The extensive bamboo forests of southern China were the inspiration for the design. The bamboo look serves two purposes. It reflects the character of the region, and thus creates identity. And it serves as a structural concept for both the load-bearing frame of the stadium stands and the supports for the wide-span roof structure. The outermost part of the stadium unites façade, structure and overarching architectural theme in a single feature. The natural look of the bamboo forest, together with the interplay of light and shadow between the trunks, is interpreted structurally through rows of slender steel supports, as outsize, abstract versions of the bamboo shape.

The stadium is being built in the immediate

vicinity of a sports arena and swimming bath, which have already established an east-west axis. The stadium and the attached warming-up place fall in with this existing urban axis. The choice of a pure circle for the geometry of the stadium was a decision not to introduce any other geographical orientation into the urban-planning situation, and to emphasize the central character of the sports venue. Appropriately for the uses of the building, the stadium stands on a grassed plinth, which incorporates on the inside the lower tiers of seating and internal functional areas.

The geometry of the spectator seats involves a modulation from the oval of the athletics track into a perfect circle. The undulating upper tier of the stands is the result of this modulation, creating a large number of seats on the long sides of the pitch and fewer seats on the short sides. The curved line of the upper edge of the stands is repeated by the overall shape of the stadium.

Visitors to a sports event access the stadium via broad flights of steps that lead up to the podium on four sides. The flat podium allows free circulation around the whole stadium and easy access to the seats from any side. Visitors pass through the forest of steel supports into the first

The Asturias town centre twists and turns along the banks of the river Nalón. The Sports and Leisure Centre project has been developed within a plan to transform and regenerate the coal-mining area of Asturias, following a deep crisis in a sector that until now had been its main source of wealth: its coal mines.

The architects understood that within the context, the building should have a symbolic, turn-of-the-century appeal, marking a turning point in the life of the coalfields of Asturias. A final decision as to the exact location of the site was yet to be taken at the competition stage. The project brief asked for an idea, a design concept. In Langreo, the general impression is that there is little land available.

The existing space was taken up by the surrounding mountains, the hitherto booming industrial area and the homes of all those who had found work there. The idea submitted was based on this concept: to propose a new landscape rather than a new building.

C.N.I. Syrdall Schwemm Recreational Baths
in Niederanven / Luxembourg

Golden Eye-catcher

Design: 4a Architekten

The new Syrdall Schwemm school and recreational baths in Niederanven has numerous attractions to offer, not only with its extensive range of bathing options – the sight of the distinctively designed building alone is food for discussion. Iridescent gold, its dynamic structural shape attracts attention from a distance while still fitting in harmoniously with its surroundings.

The new school and recreational baths is situated in a beautiful landscape, a valley basin with a steep north hillside location and a slope of around 14 metres. At the point where the village meets the countryside, it marks the end of the build-up area. Freely arranged in its immediate vicinity are located a school centre, a retirement home, the town hall and a business centre. The community wished as far as possible to retain the character of the natural environment and to make it tangible in the building itself. The architects captured the particular topographical features of the location, reflecting it in the architecture of the new recreational baths. With its compact, dynamic structural shape, the building integrates gently into its setting, its large-surface glazing simultaneously corresponding with the surrounding countryside. The transparent character of the recreational baths creates a fluid transition between indoor and outside space, its golden exterior façade relating to the property’s description “On the Sand”.

The spacious and transparently designed entrance hall to the baths gives a clear view into the bathing area, while its various gastronomic offerings entice visitors to linger awhile. All of the baths’ functional areas can be accessed from here. The changing areas are arranged over two floors: single changing rooms for recreational bathers are situated on the ground floor, while the upper floor accommodates changing rooms for school classes and clubs. This spatial separation provides for clear routes for visitors as well as equalizing the flow of visitors. The upper floor also houses the sauna wing. This can be accessed either from the foyer or via a gallery from the bathing hall. The compact and dynamic form of the building can also be experienced in the bathing hall. With its spacious and airy design, the visitor has a clear overview of the various functional areas and can easily orientate himself. The individual pools are simply and clearly shaped and are organized in accordance with their function: the large swimming pool is linked to the changing and shower rooms, while the recreational and children’s pools as well as access to the outdoor pool are arranged along the south and west façade, which is glazed to the height of the storey. Due to the incline of the plot, this adventure area is at a higher level than the sports pool, so that the different areas are already zoned off due to the incorporation of the topography in the interior.

The transparent design of the bathing hall not only allows generous amounts of light to enter far into the foyer, but also offers a 360° panoramic view into the scenic surrounding countryside. The filigree, façade-high glazing was developed as a post and mullion construction with an interior supporting steel structure and large-format panels. Vertical flat steel bars form the supporting elements of the façade structure. The flat steel bars are inclined slightly inwards, so reducing the room volume in the upper area of the swimming hall. Horizontal flat-steel girders are stretched between the vertical profiles. Positioned in front of the supporting structure is a slim steel post and mullion construction consisting of T-bars, so that incoming air flowing in from below can spread unimpeded along the surface of the façade.

The particular highlight and constitutive element in the bathing hall is the tube slide. While the starting and finishing point – a distinctively designed spiral staircase and the catch pool – is located in the bathing hall, the slide penetrates the south façade at two points and snakes its way down on the outside. This is a striking example of how aesthetics can be combined with function in a natural way. The spiral staircase of the slide not only has an unusual design but at the same time also serves as an exhaust air funnel for the ventilation system.

Two staircases in the bathing hall lead up to the gallery on the upper storey, which widens like a brace along the north and east façade of the building. To the west, the gallery leads to an outdoor terrace where the visitor can retire and relax in a tranquil atmosphere. Facing diagonally opposite at the other end of the brace is the sauna wing. With its steam bath, Finnish sauna, cold-water area, multi-sensory shower, foot-warming tub, relaxation room, an outdoor sauna equipped with a large outdoor garden, the sauna landscape offers a comprehensive range of attractions, appealing to visitors with its spatial quality. The architects modelled the outdoor area of the sauna landscape into the adjacent slope in such a way that the building flows into the landscape, part of this providing an opportunity for all the senses to recuperate – both inside and out. The harmony of form and functionally well-prepared planning of the recreational baths are rounded off by a friendly interior design characterised by fresh, strong colours and warm materials. Drops and circles are a constantly recurring element. This can be seen, for example, in the design of the ceiling, where the view of the bathing hall from below is dissected into colourful surfaces derived from circles, as well as in the control system and even in individual accessories such as mirrors and lights.

Along with the client’s desire for a modern and family-friendly baths, optimizing the building’s use of energy was a key area of concern at the planning stage. The focus lay on minimizing the consumption of energy and water, preventing draughts in the façade area and on protecting the building from overheating during the summer. The heat supply is therefore provided by a local heating network that is fed from the existing cogeneration plant, while the technical plants have been minimized and optimized. Lighting and ventilating the building using largely natural means was also an important factor. The large-surface glazing towards the south and west ensures maximum solar energy yields, while a high standard of insulation reduces transmission and ventilation

requirements. The hall can be aerated and de-aerated naturally through apertures in the façade and through light domes. This efficient form of transverse ventilation protects the bathing hall from overheating in the summer, while saving the drive energy required to run the mechanical ventilation system. Heat recovery systems with minimum power and energy requirements as well as maximum efficiency were used in all systems. All ventilation systems likewise have internal heat recovery with a level of efficiency of 60-75% (plate heat exchangers). With the exception of the cold-water pool, the bathing water plants were fitted with heat recovery systems in order to pre-heat the required freshwater protection. In addition, the bathing water is treated primarily with ozone – only during peak hours during the summer is the water chlorinated.

The new sports and recreational baths is therefore an eye-catcher not only from the outside. Both the client and visitors are delighted with the ideal interplay between user-orientated architecture and a high-quality atmosphere, the harmonious choice of materials and, not least, the optimization of energy.

NBBJ’s proposed design for the new Dalian Shide football stadium in China represents a new direction in sports architecture by moving away from the creation of a building based on pure form.

The organic architecture of the building challenges the typical stadium typology to become more than an impressive skin wrapped around an ordinary seating bowl.

Designed to emulate a garden, NBBJ’s Garden Stadium has only what is needed to thrive, and those functions are clearly organized and expressed. This simple effectiveness in design leads to a dramatically improved fan experience as well as greater ease of operations. In addition, the building’s carbon footprint is minimized, making Garden Stadium a part of a larger sustainable community.

The reclaimed site captures a new place in the city, with spectacular views across the ocean and out to the mountains and center city. Growing from this new coastal park, the design proposes that the land is folded open to create two garden walls, which support the venue, inserting the bowl between them.

The walls become iconic elements, creating a strong and visually striking support system while leaving the ends open to connect the event inside to its urban context on the outside. The roof is a flexible system of cables and fabric to protect the fans from the elements, beautiful and unique, fluttering overhead.

This concept was developed as a response to recent stadia design trends, which focus on powerful exterior designs, but have not yet improved upon the interior bowl experience. Even in the highly publicized stadiums recently built in China, the typical approach to the bowl has not yet evolved to influence the exterior design.

The proposed design for the Garden Stadium transforms this traditional approach by dramatically opening the seating bowl to the city of Dalian. This openness not only creates a more integrated experience for those seated in the bowl and walking on the concourses, but it also allows a connection to the site and city surrounding the stadium, allowing the local community to be a part of the event.

The garden walls contain all of the vital systems of the building: the structure for the roof, the VIP suites, the toilets and concessions stands, the mechanical spaces, and the ticket booths. The main concourse is continuously open to the field–unlike most stadiums where concourses are separate spaces with few views into the bowl—and this new openness retains a spectator’s constant connection with the action.

The walls are clad, facing outwards in living plants that change color and character depending on the four seasons—adding carbon-reducing plants where one would normally find an expanse of concrete and steel. The wall is clad on the inside, facing the concourse with giant LED panels, powered by on-site renewable energy, which changes instantly, compared to the outer wall which changes only naturally.

This stadium has the capacity to ultimately become a global icon for sustainable design by reducing energy consumption, improving energy efficiency, contributing to clean air, and developing a sustainable community. Utilizing these sustainable concepts as core design principals, the Garden Stadium performs as an environmentally responsible design and creates a unique iconic image for the site and for the city of Dalian.

Measures for a Sustainable Design:
• GREEN WALLS: Provide building insulation, reduces energy use, reduces heat island effect, filters air pollution, reduces green house gases, softens the typical hard edge of a stadium.
• WATER REUSE: A holistic water recycling system can dramatically reduce water waste and can be used for irrigation, fire fighting, toilet flushing, and air conditioning.
• RENEWABLE POWER: Create energy sources on the site by integrating wind turbines and solar cells into the building walls, roof and site.
• POROUS SITE PAVING: Large site application to slow the rate of water run-off and reduce the impact on storm water drains.
• EFFICIENCY: Improve overall building insulation and airtightness.
• PRE-FABRICATION: Factory pre-fabricate as many building components as possible. The factory could be temporarily created on site.

For the Olympiastadion Berlin, the central building to the historical 1936 Olympics sports complex, design problems between the historical preservation requirements, careful modernisation and current requirements for a multifunctional use, including that of a pure football arena, have been addressed and transformed into a synthesis.

The stadium is conceived as a uniform entity relating to the entire spatial context. The master plan proposed by Werner March in 1936 remains under urban historic preservation, with the new plans emphasising the quality of the original structure. All necessary additions have been placed underground, outside of the stadium, to prevent obvious visual intervention to the stadium’s graceful appearance.

The modifications cover the following areas:

Damage survey and renovation of the concrete structure

Modification of the upper tier and complete reconstruction of the lower tier

Sinking of the playing field by 2.65 metres

Construction of the stand roof structure

Modernisation of all technical and athletic areas

Construction of VIP lounges and refreshment areas

Construction of outer, underground areas supporting technical functions and circulation consisting of bi-level underground garages for c. 630 parking spaces, an entrance tunnel, main technical and maintenance facilities, a warm-up hall with a 100 metre track and VIP entrance areas to the stadium.

For the renovations work on the façades and the cladding of the columns consisting of Muschelkalk (fossil embedded limestone) and Gauinger Travertine, utmost attention was paid to preserve the material. Before the deconstruction, an accurate record of the condition, placement and registration of each stone is kept in order to restore the original appearance.

The lower stand, which could not be saved within reasonable financial means, has been completely rebuilt in stages. With the construction of the lower tier, the playing field was lowered ca. 2.6 metres to settle the conflict between the distance required of the multifunctional track and field
