New Metro Station 20 on Metro Line 1 in Sofia, Bulgaria
Client: Sofia Capital Muncipality, Architecture and Urban Spatial Development Service
Competition team: Peter Ruge Architekten
Peter Ruge, Kayoko Uchiyama, Matthias Matschewski, Alison McNicol, Hyesook Ahn, Duan Fu,
Location: Sofia, Bulgaria
Brief: Design of the new Metro Station 20 on Metro Line 1, including public spaces and land-scape design.
Scope of services: Open international competition
Size Site: 12, 390 sqm
GFA: 2,430 sqm

Location

Acting as a primary metro connection between Sofia’s city centre and the airport, and the hub of a major commercial redevelopment plan, the design of Station 20 site seeks to establish clear pathways, form active connections and harmonise architecture and landscape.

Site

The sites linear structure is inspired by the pattern and scale of the neighbouring high-density housing blocks of the Druzhba residential quarter. The angular direction of the landscape reflects the natural structure of the site boundary, generating a visual language that informs the division of public spaces and creates pathways, guiding pedestrian flow to and from the station.

Architecture

Main entry to Station 20’s underground concourse level is accessed via a vast corner plaza, providing a public space for circulation between the station services and the existing bus service infrastructure. The sweeping canopy of the entrance hall emerges out of the landscape as a wave, simultaneously pulling the structure up as it pushes the plaza down into the ground to meet with the level of the concourse. Finely cast steel elements with a non-flammable canvas lining stretched underneath, create an elegant structure and a glowing interior, achieved through concealed and integrated lighting.

Concourse

In response to the 120,000 daily flow of passengers, the stations concourse level has been extended to accommodate the maximum passenger loads expected, thus reducing congestion through passenger control systems. Visual connection from all entrances into the halls have been optimised to promote passenger safety, assist station security and maximise natural light.

The concourse is further extended to include a shopping court, capitalising on high passenger flows, whilst providing future potential for an underpass connection from the station to the planned adjacent shopping centre development.

Kuwait International Airport is planned to significantly increase capacity and establish a new regional air hub in the Gulf – the project’s strategic aims will be matched by a state-of-the-art terminal building, which will provide the highest levels of comfort for passengers and will set a new environmental benchmark for airport buildings. Its design is rooted in a sense of place, responsive to the climate of one of the hottest inhabited environments on earth and inspired by local forms and materials.

The terminal has a trefoil plan, comprising three symmetrical wings of departure gates. Each façade spans 1.2 kilometres and all extend from a dramatic 25-metre-high central space. The terminal balances the enclosure of this vast area with a design that is highly legible at a human scale – for simplicity and ease of use there are few level changes.

To further aid orientation, the building is planned under a single roof canopy, punctuated by glazed openings that filter daylight, while deflecting direct solar radiation. The canopy extends to shade a generous entrance plaza and is supported by tapering concrete columns – their fluid, organic forms draw inspiration from the contrast between the solidity of the stone and the shape and movement of Kuwait’s traditional dhow sailing boats.

The project targets LEED ‘gold’ – it aims to be the first passenger terminal in the world to attain this level of environmental accreditation. The concrete structure provides thermal mass and the roof incorporates a large expanse of photovoltaic panels to harvest solar energy.

Foster + Partners has designed a flexible masterplan for the site, with the terminal strategically located to anticipate and enable future expansion. The airport will initially accommodate 13 million passengers per year, with the flexibility to increase to 25 million passengers and to accommodate 50 million passengers with further development.

Mouzhan Majidi, Chief Executive of Foster + Partners, commented: “The scale of the airport shows Kuwait’s great foresight in recognising the benefits of strategic investment in future infrastructure. The environmental ambitions driving the project are equally impressive. We are pleased to have this opportunity to reveal our designs. The emblematic three-winged form will be as memorable from the air as from the ground – a new symbol of contemporary Kuwait, which resonates with its rich culture and history.”

Nikolai Malsch, a partner at Foster + Partners, said: “We look forward to continuing to work with the Ministry of Public Works and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation Kuwait on the planning and design of the new airport. We have established an excellent working relationship with our client – we have a shared goal to create a terminal that is an exemplar of sustainable design and will establish Kuwait as the region’s leading air hub.”

Guarulhos Airport Terminal 3

2011-

Design : biselli+katchborian

New International Terminal in Guarulhos Airport, in São Paulo TPS3 – Guarulhos

The new Passenger Terminal Complex of the São Paulo International Airport, located in Guarulhos, is comprised of two volumetrically distinct but connected sectors: a 230.000m² Passenger Terminal (TPS3) and a 150.000m² Parking Garage. São Paulo International Airport is currently the largest airport in Brazil and serves as the country’s main hub for international travel.

The design of the new terminal is based on three principles: a unique and monumental character inherent to architecture on an international scale; the prioritization of sound construction methodology to ensure the timely achievement of project goals; and the full functionality of the design to make the transit of up to 19 million annual travelers both reasonable and efficient.

The passenger terminal will be connected to the surrounding road network by the existing runway system that currently powers terminals 1 and 2, as well as the cargo terminals. To maximize the functionality of an expansion that is projected to fluctuate 12 to 19 million passengers per year, additional transportation options—such as a subway, elevated rail and/or future high speed train—are also being considered.

The geometry of the roof reinforces the “under one roof” concept and proposes a structural system that, despite the apparent formal complexity, results in a simple design. As a single morphological element, the roof reflects the horizontality of the site and suggests topography consistent with the primary function of the building. The curvature of the frontal horizontal surface is reflected directly by three large, smooth arches that are easily distinguishable on the scale of the airport and that are consistent with modern building regulations.

A series of special steel trusses, spaced 15 meters apart, will support the structure and ensure that the eaves are projected at their appropriate heights; the result of which will be a curve that originates above the check in area, rises gradually to a peak at the center of the structure and then levels off more abruptly towards the far end of the building.
Team Leader: Kostaras James; Team Members: Que Zhenqing, Xiong Xing, Zhou Shi, Li Hua, Zeng Yan; USA The Permanent Secretary for Transport and Housing (Transport), Mr Francis Ho, said at the prize presentation ceremony last week that the superb quality of entries for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB)‧Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities (HKBCF) International Design Ideas Competition had provided lots of valuable creative concepts to serve as reference for the detailed design of the HKBCF. Mr Ho said he looked forward to continued support from the community for the HZMB and HKBCF projects with a view to making the latter a new international boundary crossing facility for Hong Kong and to enhancing the economic development and competitiveness of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. “The HKBCF is a very important part of the Hong Kong section of the HZMB project. To us, the HKBCF will be more than a cargo processing and passenger clearance facility for goods and passengers traveling via the HZMB. It will definitely serve as a strategic road network and thus will further strengthen Hong Kong’s status as an international transportation and aviation hub,” said Mr Ho at the prize presentation ceremony of the HZMB HKBCF International ‧ Design Ideas Competition. Situated on an artificial island reclaimed from the open water off the north-east of Hong Kong International Airport, the HKBCF has the geographical advantages of being located next to the Airport and connected to the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link, which is under planning. Mr Ho pointed out that the HZMB is a project of strategic importance to Hong Kong, Macao and the PRD area in terms of economic development as well as community integration. “With the new bridge in operation, the journey time between Hong Kong and the western PRD can be shortened to within three hours. It will significantly reduce the cost and time for passenger and goods flow between the two areas.” To cope with the construction schedule of the HZMB projects, the detailed design of reclamation works within Hong Kong territory and the ground investigation works have already started in September and December 2009 respectively. The detailed design work of the HKBCF will begin soon. To make the HKBCF a new landmark for Hong Kong and enhance its reputation in the international arena, the Highways Department co-organized the design ideas competition last December with relevant government departments as well as local professional institutions, including the Architectural Services Department; the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department; the Environmental Protection Department; The Hong Kong Institute of Architects; The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers; The Hong Kong Institution of Highways and Transportation; The Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects and Hong Kong Institute of Planners. Qualified professionals in the fields of architecture, planning and engineering as well as the general public in Hong Kong and worldwide were invited to contribute their innovative ideas and concepts, including the use of advanced environmental and sustainable technologies for the design and construction of the HKBCF, in particular the Passenger Clearance Building. The competition received an overwhelming response with over 160 entries from more than 20 countries and regions, over half of which were from countries spanning the five continents, including the Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia, India, Egypt, Romania and Jordan. The jury panel of the design competition comprised renowned professionals and celebrities from different fields from the Mainland, Hong Kong and overseas. The members include renowned architect Mr Richard Hawkins of Foster + Partners; Professor and Chair of Department of Architecture and Urban Design, University of California, Los Angeles, Dr Hitoshi Abe; former Chief Secretary of Hong Kong, Sir David Akers-Jones; Chairman of the Council for Sustainable Development, Mr Bernard Charnwut Chan; Past President of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Dr Cheng Hon-kwan; China Architectural Design Master and Director of the College of Architecture and Civil Engineering, South China University of Technology, Professor He Jingtang; and Immediate Past President of The Hong Kong Institute of Architects, Dr Ronald Lu. To enable the public to enjoy the high quality work, the Highways Department has arranged a sharing session with the winners of the open and professional groups as well as a roving exhibition of the entries. Details of these activities are as follows: Date: May 15 to June 6, 2010 Opening hours: 10am – 6pm Venue: Former Central Police Station at 10 Hollywood Road, Central Exhibition of winning entries (the first stop) Date: May 15 to 28, 2010 Opening hours: 10am – 6pm Venue: Tung Chung MTR Station For further details of competition results and roving exhibitions, please visit the competition website.

The Docks of Paris is a long, thin building built in concrete at the turn of the last century. It was a depot for goods brought up the Seine by barge, which were deposited, and then transferred to dray or train.

The city of Paris launched a competition to create a new cultural program and building on this site. Whether or not to keep the existing concrete structure was a choice left to the participants.

Jakob+MacFarlane opted to retain the existing structure and use it to form and influence the new project.

The existing structure was built in 1907 as an industrial warehouse facility for the Port of Paris and was the first reinforced concrete building in Paris. The 3 story structure was conceived as a series of 4 pavilions, each with one 10m wide bay and four 7.5m wide bays. On the level corresponding to the Quai Austerlitz, the 10m bay is accessible from the street with the other bays roughly 1.25m higher, facilitating the storing and loading of materials for transport.

The concept of the new project is known as a ‘Plug-Over’. Here, the idea was to create a new external skin that is inspired primarily by the flux of the Seine and the promenades along the sides of the river banks. The skin both protects the existing structure and forms a new layer containing most of the public circulation systems and added program, as well as creating a new top floor to the existing building.

The new structural system supporting this skin is the result of a systematic deformation of the existing conceptual grid of the docks building. An arborescent generating method is used to create a new system from the existing system, that is, ‘growing’ the new building from the old as new branches grow on a tree.

This skin is created principally from a glass exterior skin, steel structure, wood decking and grassed, faceted roofscape.

The ‘Plug-Over’ operates not only as a way of exploiting the maximum building envelope but enables a continuous public path to move up through the building from the lowest level alongside the Seine to the roof deck and back down, a kind of continuous loop enabling the building to become part of the urban condition.
The programme is a rich mix centred on the themes of design and fashion, including exhibition spaces, the French Fashion Institute (IFM), music producers, bookshops, cafes, and a restaurant.

HOK today unveils its designs for the expansion of Bangalore International Airport (BIAL)Terminal 1 – a design which will bolster Bangalore’s standing as the gateway to Southern India.

Unveiled by BIAL Managing Director Sanjay Reddy, the expansion will extend the existing Terminal One from 72,000sqm to 134,000sqm, enabling the airport to cater for rapidly increasing passenger traffic expected to reach 17 million by 2015.

HOK’s designs for the T1 expansion unify existing and new facilities under one dramatic swooping and curving roof. The undulating wave of the roof will provide the terminal with greater physical presence and create a dramatic canopy to the main entrance, offering passengers and public protection from the weather. Inside the terminal, the radiant interiors will mirror the rich culture of the state of Karnataka and vibrant colours of the garden city.

The new expanded terminal will include 83 check-in desks, while the number of baggage reclaim belts will be increased from nine to 13. Seating arrangements within the new terminal will also increase from 2,300 to 5,300.

HOK Vice President, Anthony Leslie, who led the project team explains: “The masterplan design for the expansion of Bangalore International Airport’s Terminal One is both modern and striking and will help to further secure the city’s position on the world stage. The masterplan will help to drive wider economic growth and reflect the region’s dynamic aspirations and role as the information technology hub of the country.”

BIAL Managing Director Sanjay Reddy, adds: “The expansion of the existing terminal marks a significant milestone for Bangalore International airport. It is an important step towards giving Bangalore an airport that caters to its global aspirations and will act as an important driver for the overall growth of Bangalore, Karnataka and the Southern region of India.”

The expansion is scheduled to be completed 18 months from the commencement of its construction.

foundation architecture & design developed an iconic concept for the ‘jimmy connors world
of tennis’ stadium & tennis centre in abu dhabi. the proposed design for the tennis centre
and stadium is inspired by the deconstruction of a tennis ball.

the dissected shell of the ball has been conceptually rearranged to form an enclosure for
the tennis centre and the bowl for the stadium, creating iconic and instantly recognisable
architectural forms that echo the sport to which the buildings relate. the distinctive curves
of the seams are apparent in the roof lines of the buildings. the shells of the buildings float
above a podium that enables sheltered movement between the facilities.
